Following the Money

“Counterintelligence 101 is following the money, because following money is how you compromise people,” says Sen. Ron Wyden of the Senate Finance Committee and Senate Intelligence Committee. Democrats belonging to congressional committees have grown frustrated with the lack of access to President Trump’s financial records. Though members of the House Intelligence Committee have sought subpoenas for the Deutsche Bank, the major lender to the Trump Organization, they have so far been unsuccessful. The Deutsche bank has declined to give any privileged information without subpoena.

President Trump has drawn a “red line” before his family’s financial records, and many Republican congressmen support him in this decision. However, Democrats believe that said records may contain evidence of Russian collusion. That does seem possible. As Wyden has said: “[follow] the money.”

Is Trump Losing his Political Identity?

Two events have caused commentators to question President Trump’s political identity. The first is the meeting on immigration he held with both Democrats and Republicans. Some are saying the President, in an effort to prove his competence, came off as a yes-man, agreeing with conflicting assertions proposed by both parties, and allowing for pork barreling by the congressmen. Trump’s behavior at the meeting has received push back from republican icons such as Ann Coulter. who said he “agree[d] with whatever the last person who sp[oke] . . . . said.” The second event is President Trump’s announcement that he will be attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Though Trump’s press secretary has said he is attending the conference to talk about “America first” policy, his attendance contradicts the anti-elitist base upon which he ran for the Presidency. Therefore, Americans should be left confused at to what President Trump stands for.

It is unclear how this confusion will affect Trump’s support, but it may be to his advantage. If Republican Congressmen are unwilling to scrutinize the President, then they need only a few examples of his fitness to justify their support. Though the President’s behavior may be contradictory, it is just the sort of smoke bomb he needs to buy himself some time.

How the Tax Reform Impacts Impeachment

The Washington Post has provided an analysis of how the new tax code is set to impact party support in the upcoming years. It notes that the majority of both blue collar Americans and college graduates do not support the plan; however middle class Americans are set to benefit in the short run through tax cuts. If these benefits are realized soon, that may mean that the Republican party maintains its majority in Congress through the 2018 midterms, which will substantially decrease the likelihood of impeachment.

A New Approach to the 25th Amendment

25th amendment, bipartisan, Congress, Eric Posner, Politics, politics of impeachment

This article reports on a proposal made by Eric Posner, a professor from the University of Chicago Law School. He suggests that there is enough ambiguity in the 25th amendment’s phrasing, “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” that Congress could remove the President not only for mental instability, but political instability as well. In pursuit of this idea, he recommends that Congress form a bipartisan committee to evaluate whether the removal of President Trump is justified on these grounds. Such a committee would allow the removal of Trump for less heinous crimes than those required for impeachment. Additionally, even if it fails to do that, it would act as a means of reigning Trump in by reminding him of the consequences of his radical politics.

This opinion piece, written Robert Kagan, explores the idea of a congressional take-over of executive power to create a so called congressional government. To defend the merits of this concept, Kagan points to historical instances of congressional take-overs, as well as modern examples, such as the Russian Sanctions. This sort of action may be at least as concievable as impeachment, as it would require less congressional support.

Congress, debt ceiling, political question

Can Trump make enough enemies in Congress to get impeached? This article suggests that with every crticism President Trump makes towards Republican legislators the higher his impeachment chances become; a recent relevant example being his siding with Democrats on the debt ceiling issue. It is true that impeachment is a political question, meaning that it is left to the discretion of the elected. As such, President Trump’s chances of impeachment very well may ride on his political usefulness.
